Kartre - leštiť či pieskovať?

Crankcase covers – polishing or sandblasting?

Ponúkam len porovnanie metódy opracovania a výsledný produkt. Ako prvé som opracoval kartre pre Ariel 500 OHV r.1928 a použil som brúsne plátno zo zrnom 120. Očistené kartre som nahrubo vybrúsil, a potom som prešiel na plátno so zrnom 220. Časovo to zabralo tiež zhruba 2 hodiny.

I would like to share with you my experience from restoration of Ariel engine crankase covers. When I posted photographs of polished covers on Facebook, suddenly opinions appeared that it should have been done differently and so on. I don´t want to impose my opinion, I just want to compare different methods and the results. At first I worked on 1928 Ariel 500 OHV covers and I used 120 granulation sandpaper. I cleaned the covers, sanded it and moved on to a sandpaper with 220 granulation. I tried to treat all of the surfaces as good as possible but I also tried to preserve the small defects from casting by the producer. Also the deep scratches caused by using the motorcycle in the past were preserved. It seemed right to me to leave some of the small defects as a part of this engine´s history. Since I mostly used electrical tools the whole procedure took me about two hours. For polishing I used a cloth disc and green paste. The remains of the paste were removed by industrial cleaner but a technical gasoline would do the job as well. It took another two hours approximately. The result was that the cover surface was too shiny and so then I used a brush disk to give the surface a mat effect.

Časovo to zabralo približne 3 hodiny.

The surface treatment of the other crankcase covers from 1927 Ariel 500 OHV was done by Ballotini glass beads blasting media. Basicaly this blasting material consists of tiny glass beads used by the roadmakers to make the lines on the pavement reflective. At first I just quickly sanded the covers with a sandpaper of 120 granulation and then sandblasted them with glass beads. Tiny beads removed all of the dirt and flattened the scratches. The surface still seemed too rough to me so I polished it with a brush disc also to smoothen the thin layers in which the dirt could build up in the future. This took me about 3 hours.

To make things complete I also enclose the covers treated by chemical polishing. I have never used this method before, but for Mirko´s 1930 Ariel 557 this procedure was chosen and the result seems very good to me. The engine was polished chemicaly in 2010 and it still looks good now. The front timing cover though was once more polished by cloth disc after the chemical polishing. The owner just did not like it.

I polished the 1928 557 SV engine few years ago and the shiny effect vanished in two years. Now the engine has an appropriate patina and nobody now argues that in time of production noone had time for polishing and that it could not be like that.

V tomto prípade u motocykla "Made in Chotusice" sa nebránim menším úpravám.

I agree that if you manage to buy a motorcycle in an original condition, you should modify as least as possible and leave it in an original condition as much as possible. In that case I would not consider such modifications as appropriate. But most of the times we are capable only to get hold of an old wreck and we are trying to buy the missing parts  on internet or some Exchange. In this case of motorcycle „Made in Chotusice“ I do not hesitate with small modifications. The bike is going to get the new paintjob anyway and nobody will ever examine whether it is in an original condition. You decide which  method you will choose. But you can even now see the results of what I have done and how it looks after some years of riding.
